The rise of electric vehicles (EVs) has revolutionised transportation and energy consumption, and the United Kingdom is no exception with the government's 2035 zero-emission vehicle mandate. This surge in EV adoption has led to a growing demand for electricians with specialised knowledge in EV charging point (EVCP) installation and maintenance. So why should electricians explore this market, and how can an EV charging qualification benefit them?
Despite the increase in EVs, there remains a shortage of EVCP infrastructure. According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), only one charge point was installed for every 53 cars sold in 2022. Meeting the government's target of installing 300,000 chargers by 2030 would require a 288% increase in monthly installations. To address this gap, the UK government has committed nearly £400 million to support the installation of EVCP infrastructure.
Electricians play a crucial role in ensuring the safe and robust installation of EVCPs as the industry expands and in the transition to a green economy. Rigorous industry-led training is essential to maintain safety standards and address the complexities of EV charging installations, while also presenting new opportunities to companies to grow and enhance their skills base.
Luke Osborne, Energy & Emerging Technologies Solutions Advisor at the Electrical Contractors' Association (ECA), emphasises the importance of upskilling training for qualified electricians. "Incorrect installation not only poses safety risks but also hampers the intended low-carbon, energy and financial savings.

EV charging qualifications through recognised awarding organisations are approved by the Electrotechnical Certification Scheme (ECS), enhancing professional profiles for qualified Electricians through the MyECS CPD record. These qualifications recognise ECS gold card Electricians as being the minimum as a pre-requisite for enrolling, preventing unqualified and inexperienced people from working in these areass which is a concern for competent installations and safety of the user. Now City & Guilds and Shell are working with ECS to support the industry further with sponsorship and funding for these qualifications.
