Card information

The Cabling card (white with green stripe) is for individuals who assist in the installation and laying all types of cables as part of a cable. 

This card is for workers that have completed a formal industry regulated qualification, which includes safety, theory and practical training for the installations of cables.

  • Cable Installation Supervisor

Eligibility and requirements

ECS Cabling - Cable Hand
To be eligible for an ECS Cabling – Cable Hand (white with green stripe) card, applicants must be working towards the qualification that leads to leading Cable Hand and provide proof of:

Either Route 1: Do you already have a JIB-approved electrical theory qualification?
1. If you already have a qualification such as C&G 2365, 2330 or 2360 (or EAL equivalents), this will be accepted for your card. View a full list of approved qualifications (Only the health and safety element of these qualifications is recognised by the JIB for a Cabling green stripe card).

Or Route 2: If you don’t hold a JIB-approved theory qualification...
If you don’t hold a JIB-approved electrical theory qualification, you’ll need the following: 

1. Successful completion of ONE of the following Health & Safety qualifications or courses: 

  • VQ Level 3 for power supply and distribution cabling health and safety unit
  • Level 1 Health and Safety in a Construction Environment
  • CITB Health and Safety Awareness: Site Safety Plus (both classroom and remotely invigilated versions)
  • CCNSG Safety Passport – National Course or Renewal Course
  • Safety Passport Alliance (SPA) Core H&S Course 
Please Note: Following a recent decision of CSCS to withdraw recognition of certain IOSH courses while they collaborate to develop updated verification processes, ECS will also suspend acceptance of any IOSH course certificates after 31st August 2023. This will apply to all cards and all exemption routes. Read more

2. You only need to sit a separate ECS Health, Safety & Environmental Assessment if you do not hold a valid exemption.

3. You will also need to show evidence of being engaged in the electrotechnical industry. 

If your employer has applied for the card through the Employer Portal, this has already been evidenced. Other proof can include (i) a written reference from your employer to confirm you are employed by that company. View more details on what should be included in your reference (ii) If you normally work for an employment business, a signed letter from the business to confirm your dates of engagement as a Cable Hand (iii) an electrical qualification or certificate, or enrolment on a relevant course (iv) offer letter / contract of employment / payslip from electrotechnical business or similar. 

ECS Cabling - Leading Cable Hand
To be eligible for an ECS Cabling – Leading Cable Hand (white with green stripe) card, applicants must meet the following criteria and provide proof of:
  • fully met the requirements of ECS Cabling – Cable Hand (white with green stripe) card
– and –
  • Have an employer endorsement stating a minimum of 4 year’s experience in a cable gang (this may be evidenced by the Employer applying for the card through the Employer Portal)
– and –
ECS Cabling - Cable Forman
To be eligible for an ECS Cabling – Cable Forman (white with green stripe) card, applicants must have: 
  • fully met the requirements of ECS Cabling – leading Cable Hand* (white with green stripe) card and held the card for a minimum of 3 years.
– and –
  • Have an employer endorsement (this may be evidenced by the Employer applying for the card through the Employer Portal)
– and –
ECS Cabling - Cable Installation Supervisor
To be eligible for an ECS Cabling – Cable Installation Supervisor (white with green stripe) card, applicants must have: 
  • fully met the requirements of ECS Cabling – Cable Forman* (white with green stripe) card and held the card for a minimum of 5 years.
– and –
  • Have an employer endorsement (this may be evidenced by the Employer applying for the card through the Employer Portal)
– and –
*Note: Applicants for the Cable Foreman or Cable Installation Supervisor cards who have previously held these cards with a brown stripe may (as an alternative route) hold a Health and Safety qualification at Level 4 or above such as:
  • Construction Skills (CITB) Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS),
  • CITB Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS)
  • or other similar Level 4 or above H&S qualifications in place of the level 3 technical requirements or Level 1 H&S requirements set out for a cable hand above.
This is an additional route for these cards. All other requirements for the Cable Foreman or Cable Installation Supervisor cards must be fully met.
