Homeowners

When you’re looking for an electrical contractor to do electrical work at your home we suggest that you use the Electrical Competent Person Scheme Register

The Register lists companies, including sole traders, who have registered their business with a Competent Person Scheme.

Using a company on the register gives you an assurance that you are dealing with a reputable business.

It is then worth asking the company if their electricians hold a current Electrotechnical Certification Scheme (ECS) Electrician card.

ECS card holders have qualified to the industry standard, which is currently a formal industry apprenticeship programme and a rigorous practical performance end test.

The Electrotechnical Certification Scheme (ECS) has been the skills registration scheme for the electrical industry for 50 years. If an electrician holds an ECS gold card, you know they meet the industry-recognised criteria for their job.

The ECS card:

  • Shows the cardholder is qualified to carry out UK electrical work in the area or occupations identified by the card
  • Is a valid identity card to gain access to a construction site or a property
  • Is industry-backed
  • Displays their qualification and industry occupation
  • Confirms they meet the required level of health and safety awareness
