Apprentices applying for their first gold card

Changes have been introduced to the ECS for apprentices applying for their first gold card after completing their apprenticeship. The options available to them will depend on when they apply and which edition of the Wiring Regulations they hold.

From 01 January 2019:

Apprentices with 17th edition – an Installation or Maintenance Electrician gold card will be issued if the apprenticeship certificate was issued between 1st July 2018 and 31st December 2020. Apprentices can upgrade to Registered Electrician when they gain the 18th edition.

Apprentices with 18th edition – a Registered Electrician card will be issued and no further action is needed.

To help recently qualified apprentices move from the 17th to the 18th Edition, we encourage training providers and employers to work together to look at solutions for progressing the apprentice to the latest standard over the next 18 months or so.
