Be Ready Campaign – the Building Safety Regulator

24 March 23

The Building Safety Regulator (BSR) is highlighting the need to keep up to date with the latest changes in regulation for high-risk residential buildings in England, and in particular the recent changes for building registration which opens this April.

High-risk residential buildings are defined as having two or more residential units and at least seven floors and 18 metres tall or higher. The regulator will seek to protect residents in England from unsafe practices and approximately 12,500 buildings must be registered with the Building Safety Regulator. This is in response to the Grenfell Tower fire in 2017 and represents one of the first major phases of greater regulation that will also include audit and compliance requirements for the competence of the workforce.

If you are an owner or manager, you will have a legal obligation to have a named person responsible for maintaining the safety of your high-rise residential buildings in England and you will have six months from April to register. Registering buildings will become a legal requirement and as an owner or manager you may face prosecution if you are not in compliance by October 2023.

The new ‘Be Ready’ campaign is calling on the industry to prepare for the new safety regime and to remind everyone the Building Safety Regulator is here to help with preparation.
