Domestic Electrician Apprenticeship to launch shortly

30 June 22

Following development by the Domestic Electrician Apprenticeship employer group, the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education has approved a new Domestic Electrician Level 3 apprenticeship standard which will begin delivery in the next few months. As an apprenticeship route recognised in England, this will attract appropriate government funding.

The expected training period is three years, and the apprenticeship standard will provide a Level 3 training programme that will cover all aspects of planning, installing and maintaining electrical services within a domestic setting. As well as covering traditional domestic electrical installations for both existing and new build dwellings, including both initial and periodic electrical inspection and testing, the apprenticeship also encompasses the skills required for the safe and competent installation and maintenance of smart home applications and devices, comfort and convenience technologies and assisted living technologies, and low carbon environmental technologies including EV charging points.

Domestic Electrician apprentices will gain a Level 3 technical Electrotechnical in Dwellings qualification and will be required to carry out a modified version of the existing industry assessment of competence and End Point Assessment, the AM2. As this is a government recognised Level 3 apprenticeship, those successfully completing will be eligible for an ECS gold card with the occupation of Domestic Electrician.

The apprenticeship was developed by an industry employer group to provide a structured training programme for both new entrants and those already in the workforce who would not be able to complete the scope of work required in the Electrotechnical Apprenticeship standard for Installation and Maintenance Electricians.

More information on the apprenticeship and Experienced Worker Assessment, as well as details on a bridging course for Domestic Electricians wishing to work in other parts of the sector in the future, will be highlighted once available. More information can be found on the TESP and IFATE websites.
