Emergency Lighting Qualification Recognised as CPD for Electricians and Fire Technicians

The Electrotechnical Certification Scheme (ECS) has confirmed the recognition of the EAL Level 3 Award in the Design, Installation and Maintenance of Emergency Lighting Systems as an approved CPD qualification for Electricians and Fire & Emergency Systems (FESS) Technicians.

The qualification supports competent, qualified operatives to deepen their technical understanding of emergency lighting systems in line with BS 5266, BS EN 1838 and BS EN 50172, reinforcing safe design, installation and ongoing maintenance in safety-critical environments. It is not a route to occupational reclassification, but a structured upskilling pathway for those already operating within defined electrotechnical or FESS roles.

By recognising this qualification as CPD, ECS is reinforcing the principle that life-safety systems require both occupational competence and specialist technical knowledge, aligned with industry standards. This is also reflected in the forthcoming revalidation requirements for sector frameworks.

Kevin Sparrow, Senior Industry Manager, BSE at EAL said:

"ECS recognition of this award highlights EAL’s commitment to developing qualifications that meet industry needs, empower contractors and businesses, and uphold high standards of safety and competence throughout the sector."
