Initiative announced to help achieve recognised UK standard for competence for FESS Systems Technicians

The Institute of Fire Safety Managers (IFSM) and certification body SSAIB have put in place a joint initiative to build on the growing success of the Fire, Emergency and Security Systems (FESS) apprenticeship and recognise the benefit of certification through ECS for FESS Systems Technicians in achieving a recognised UK standard for competence. The initiative recognises the professional technician status gained from the specialist apprenticeship and how it is contributing significantly to filling the skills gap in the FESS sector.

Apprentices will benefit from the start of their learning journey, with free student membership from the Institute as they begin their regional FESS apprenticeship. On completion, equipped with their ECS/FESS competency card as a Systems Technician, they will then be able to apply for the Institute’s Technician membership grade, TIFSM, with the Institute giving this free for the first year as they start on their chosen career.

Significantly, this joint IFSM and SSAIB initiative also provides a route for the existing workforce, upskilling from Operative to Fire Technician, supported by their ECS/FESS competency card, to apply for the Institute’s Technician membership grade, TIFSM, by recognising their profession status. With the announcement of Experienced Worker Assessments launching for FESS through BPEC and EAL, this provides more reason to consider upskilling and assessment of competence for those who have been working in the industry for a number of years, but have not undertaken formal qualifications or training.

Trevor Jenks, SSAIB National Training Manager, said: “SSAIB are delighted to have been involved in this exciting new initiative which gives professional recognition to the FESS Fire Systems Technician. Starting with IFSM student membership the apprentice will benefit from the Institute’s support throughout their journey to FESS Fire Technician and starting their professional career as an IFSM Technical member. The SSAIB continues to take a leading role in setting and raising technical standards as the whole FESS sector upskills on its route to competence and professional recognition.”

David White, Chairman of IFSM, said: “The Institute is passionate about encouraging young professionals into the industry and creating a career pathway for those working in the fire industry. Competency is key, and the Institute is happy to recognise the ECS/FESS card as part of its membership scheme. Members at all grades are kept up to date with the latest industry news / legislative updates and benefit from continuous professional development (CPD) opportunities. CPD is a requirement of membership, and this helps those in the industry to continue to develop and remain competent.”

Andy Reakes, JIB & ECS Director of Growth and Development, said: “We welcome this development by SSAIB and IFSM to promote the benefits of individuals achieving this national recognised, and industry set standard for FESS Systems Technicians. Membership of a professional institute provides a beneficial career development opportunity and so it is great to see these opportunities being given to FESS Systems Technicians and free to those apprentices to give valuable insight into the possibilities of a valuable career in the electrotechnical industry.”

The IFSM has produced a presentation for registered FESS training providers to use as part of their training delivery. It includes why they should become members of the professional body, the benefits, and how to apply.
