There are two main routes to gaining an ECS card if you trained outside of the UK:

1) Countries with a JIB-approved mandatory licensing system:

If the applicant trained in a country with a mandatory licensing system approved by the JIB*, an ECS gold card (such as an Installation or Maintenance Electrician) can be applied for once the following conditions are met:

  • Validated proof of the applicant’s licence must be supplied. If the applicant cannot prove they hold a mandatory licence, they must follow section 2 below.
  • The applicant must undertake and achieve:

*Countries currently recognised by the JIB as having a mandatory licensing system: Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Republic of Ireland, South Africa, United States of America

If other countries wish to have their mandatory licensing systems recognised by the JIB, the qualification authorities in that country should contact the JIB for checking and validation.

2) Countries without a mandatory licensing system

If the applicant trained in a country without a JIB-approved mandatory licensing system, or the applicant cannot prove they hold a mandatory licence, they must have undertake the following qualifications before an ECS card is applied for:

JIB Mature Candidate Assessment

The JIB Mature Candidate Assessment helps those who trained outside of the UK to demonstrate they meet the requirements of the ECS card they wish to apply for.

In many cases, the applicant’s existing qualifications will be recognised. However, in all cases, it must be assessed and verified that existing qualifications meet the same criteria as the UK requirements.

The JIB Mature Candidate Assessment is available from training providers and colleges across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. More details about the JIB Mature Candidate Assessment.
